Meet the Maker

Patte Ranney has been a maker since childhood and has explored a multitude of mediums over the years. In time, she discovered the craft about which she is most passionate - working with silver and stone. Beyond their inherent beauty, both possess a spiritual essence that soothes the soul for both the maker and the wearer. Patte takes great pride in her craftsmanship and is dedicated to refining her skills by working at the bench nearly every day. She focuses on pieces that are, at once, stunning and functional.

Patte has studied southwestern style jewelry extensively and is an assistant instructor of Silver and Lapidary at the Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico. Every piece you see here or at her booth at local art markets (with additional pieces in leather, fiber, and paper) is a manifestation of passion, dedication, and desire to bring joy to the owner.

The story behind the name.

I’ve been quite content making simply for the joy and gratification of using my hands to create things that I need or want. It’s something I got from my parents and share with my sister. I weave towels, bind books, sew clothes, fold paper into ornaments and leather into wallets. I love to make silver and stone earrings, bolos, bracelets, rings, and hair ornaments that I wear each and every day. I’ve made stools, shaker boxes, baskets, and kaleidoscopes. I’ve tried my hand at blacksmithing and soap-making. I’ve even made a very cool pair of leather shoes.

One day, my hubby ventured into my studio, and declared that I needed to sell my stuff. “People will love your things”, he claimed.

After a few successful markets, I realized it would behoove me to make the whole affair official by giving myself a ‘business’ name. Oh my gosh… my humble self struggled.

As I watched my fingers dance across the keyboard in a seemingly fruitless attempt to put just the right words together, I realized the answer was there in front of me. At the end of my arms. These hands (along with a bit of creative spirit for which I am eternally grateful) are what allow me to and be a maker. They give my soul wings. These Two Hands.
